La Llarona of the Duwamish river (the crying woman of the Duwamish River) Depicts the original meandering river before it was straightened  in the early 20th century. Based on the mythology of La Llarona, popular throughout Mexico and the American Southwest, La Llarona of the Duwamish weeps for the river which was lost from the site where the mural currently resides, known to the local inhabitants as too-KWHEHL-teed (‘a large open space’).
